Capstone California Level 1

The Capstone California Level 1 Introductory Course is a foundational programme designed to give learners a clear and comprehensive understanding of California’s dynamic wine industry. It is suitable for complete beginners as well as those building on qualifications such as WSET Level 2 or 3.
You’ll explore California’s rich winemaking history, from its origins to its modern evolution, and gain an appreciation for the state’s extraordinary geography and climate. Along the way, you’ll discover how diverse landscapes, coastal influences, and microclimates shape viticulture and wine styles across the region.
The course introduces key grape varieties alongside the fundamentals of grape growing and winemaking, offering a solid grounding in the techniques that define California’s approach to quality wine production.
You will also become familiar with some of California’s most important American Viticultural Areas (AVAs)—including Napa Valley, Sonoma County, and Santa Barbara County—and explore iconic producers whose innovation and craftsmanship have helped build California’s global reputation. Finally, the course provides insight into the state’s wine business, examining California’s influence on global production, consumption, and export markets.

The in class session is supported by multimedia content, including presentations and quizzes.
Tasting Sessions: Practical sessions to enhance tasting techniques through sampling 6 different wines.
This course is divided into 11 chapters: History & Lore, Geography & Climate, Soils, Grapes, Viticulture & Vinification, Aging & Maturation, Wine Law, Official Classifications, Terminology, Producers, Vintages, and Business of Wine.
Exam
A theory exam consisting of 50 multiple-choice questions, with a passing grade of 60%.
Upon successful completion, participants receive a Capstone California certificate and pin, qualifying them for progression to Level 2.
If you are unsuccessful, you are able to retake the exam without having to retake the course if you do not wish to. You may retake the exam until you pass.
